Eating for Healthy Aging
Consuming more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, soy foods, fish, nuts, and tea can help prevent the chronic diseases of aging.
You might not be able to turn back the clock for every wrinkle and body ache, but you can certainly reduce your risk or delay the onset of chronic diseases associated with aging, such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases.
The following are a few tips for a Healthy Aging Food Strategy:
- Balance your calorie intake to maintain a healthy weight.
- Load your diet with a variety of fruits and vegetables in every color, size, texture, and shape.
- Choose carbs that are less refined and high in fiber.
- Focas on eating more fish and seafood.
- Include more plant proteins, such as beans, lentils, peas and nuts.
- Select healthy fats and minimize saturated fat from meat, dairy and processed foods.
- Drink green, white or black tea (unsweetened) more often.
Avoid foods that are refined, overly processed, and low in nutrients, such as those made with white flour, sugars and refined oils.

Pro-Tect SPF 20 & Pro-Tect SPF 35Xtreme by A-Cute Derm
As I sit down to write this (on 5/2/2011), I am reminded that today is Melanoma Monday. Melanoma – is the deadliest form of skin cancer – and is increasing faster in females ages 15-29 year of age, than in males of the same age group.
Exposure to UV radiation is the leading risk factor for skin cancer. Despite this information, masses of teens and young women are seeking the tanning bed facilities, beaches, and pools to get their bodies tanned. What is a tan? A tan is the bodies defense mechanism telling you that you have absorbed radiation. Is that what you want?
Unfortunately, teens have access to the indoor tanning facilities, since they seem to be on every corner. There are more tanning salons, per city, than Starbucks or McDonald’s. This is scarry. This kind of activity is only going to lead to an even greater incidence of skin cancer and melanoma.
So let’s start protecting ourselves!
This is where Pro-Tect SPF 20 and Pro-Tect SPF 35 Extreme sunscreens come in. This sunscreen gives more protection than any other sunscreen in the world, today. I can say this, because the tests have been run (at an independent lab in Tennessee) showing the there is a 97% – 98% absorbancy of UVB & UVA radiation before it can damage the skin. That is more than any other sunscreen.

Vitamin D: How To Be Sure You Get Enough
Vitamin D has an illustrious history as a major bone buildng nutrient required for calcium absorpton and bone growth. Actually it has been discovered that essentially every cell in the body has receptors for active vitamin D, which wouldn’t be there if they did not have a function. Expanded research has shown that there are potential links that go far beyond bones, such as the many immune diseases.
It is suggested that the current recommendatons for vitamin D intake is far too low. Since our outdoor activity (allowing for being in more sunlight) seems to be far less, with the advent and it seems maximum usage of computers, we are in need of higher doses of vitamin D.
I recently noticed this regarding myself and have increased the amount that I take daily. If you question your vitamin D level, I suggest you see your physician and have your vitamin D blood level checked.
A few good food sources for vitamin D are as follows:
Salmon, Mackerel, Sardines, Shrimp, Milk, Orange juice (D-fortified),Yogart (D-fortified).
Maximize your vitamin D via serveral sources, such as:
- Make the most of food sources.
- Supplement daily with extra D.
- Enjoy a little sun.
- Watch your weight.

“Spring Tips” for you—-
Spring happens to be my most favorite time of year. It seems that everything is so fresh and new. Well, with jane iredale mineral cosmetics you to can have “fresh and new”.
You can start with a lighter foundation, such as the Dream Tint, a tinted moistrizer with an SPF 15, (but I would also apply sunscreen under the Dream Tint, for added protection), or you can simply mix your favorite shade of Amazing Base with a little of your sunscreen for just the right coverage
For a sun-kissed look the new So-Bronze 3 will give you a beautiful pink/nude glow and always remember when applying to use the “C” shape to the sides of the brow, temple area.
When it comes to the lips, you will want to first apply Lip Drink SPF 15 to protect and soften just before your favorite shade of pink lip colour. Pink just shouts “Spring”

Antioxidants—–
Free radicals are naturally generated during oxidative processes within living tissues. The body will typically produce natural antioxidants to neutralize free radical damage.
In the course of aging, this ability is diminished lowering the body’s immunity and increasing the vulnerability to disease. Think of the oxidative process that occurs when fruit, such as an apple, turns brown when sliced and left open to the air. But, if you were to pour an antioxidant product, such as vitamin C over the cut apple, it would not turn brown and would maintain it’s freshness.
During inflammatory conditions, one should avoid sugary foods and saturated fats. Instead choose foods that have anti-inflammatory effects such as monounsaturated fats including olive, canola and vegetable oils. Also increasing fish oils and flaxseed will give you an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids.
Acne
Client Compliance—-
Most of the time, acne is an inherited condition of the pores that needs a systematic approach. Seeking a dermatologist is usually the first step, however most dermatologists resort to long term antibiotic therapy. When that doesn’t take care of the situation, they usually turn to retinoid creams and in the most severe cases will resort to Accutane.
Clearing the most difficult acne cases can occur in 3-4 months.
So often, no one has addressed the key issue, which is combating the skin’s ability to adapt to products. A regimen of topical products to get and keep the skin clear can only be accomplished by adjusting that regimen periodically for the first several weeks. The skin will adjust to products and stop responding. That is why many of the infomercial acne products will work for about three weeks. It is not necessary to change products, but simply increase the potency or the frequency. Additionally, is the importance of using the right products and using them correctly.
It’s not enough if a client simply complies with their home care regimen most of the time. In order to get their skin clear, it is necessary to be done every day.

Sunscreen
I cannot emphasize enough or too many times, the importance of applying sunscreen 365 days/year. I all to often, talk with someone who is quick to tell me, “I don’t go out in the sun. I just go to work and home again”. And my response to them is, “if you go out the front or back door, for any reason, you need to wear sunscreen.”
Yes, this is my soapbox. But since the weather seems to be getting warmer and we’re having more sunny days, I thought this would be a good time to give you a few facts, of which you may not be aware.
First, you need at least a SPF 15, but anything over a SPF 20 is usually added chemicals you may not need. That SPF number only relates to the UVB rays (burn rays). That number has absolutely nothing to do with the UVA rays(aging rays).
The UVA rays are the ones that are there the 365 days/year regardless of the weather. They penetrate not only windows, but tinted windows, penetrate deeper into the layers of the skin, cause the wrinkles, and most skin cansers.
Even though I wear a mineral makeup with a SPF of 20, I still apply my sunscreen under the minerals. I want all the protection I can possibly obtain. And that goes for all exposed areas of the body.
So please, be sure to apply your sunscreen each and every day. You’ll be glad you did!
